Begonia brevirimosa subsp. exotica stands out as one of the showiest of all begonia species. It is a real showstopper. This New Guinea species has a shrub-like growth habit and large leaves. The elliptic shaped leaves are a dark olive green with wide bands of metallic pink. This plant will get tall and as it does will need to be staked. The pink flowers form on a terminal inflorescence. This plant needs extra humidity. It will grow fine in a humid greenhouse or garden room, or it can be grown in a large terrarium.
Before it was officinally named (Tebbitt, 2005) this plant was grown under the name, B. brevirimosa “Edenburgh.” See Mark Tebbitt’s book, Begonias Cultivation, Identification, and Natural History for more information.
Care of Begonia brevirimosa subsp. exotica:
Shade or florescent light, temp. 50 to 85 degrees, 24 to 30in. tall, allow getting fairly dry between watering, easy to grow if given extra humidity of an enclosure/terrarium.
Family: Begoniaceae.
This plant is shipped in a 3-4 inch pot.
