Begonia conchifolia var. rubrimacula
Begonia conchifolia var. rubrimacula is a very ornamental form of this Central American species. When this form of conchifolia was discovered it was given a collection number. Some of the first growers thought this number looked like a zip code, so they called this variety “Zip”. Now it is recognized as a variety of the species. The leaves are dark green, round, and peltate. At the point of petiole attachment is a distinct red dot. This form has been used a lot in breeding and has fathered many interesting hybrids. This rhizomatous begonia has a compact growth habit. The flowers are white and rise above the foliage.
